Ottawa Weekend

BL and handlers visited Ottawa for John and Sophie's baby shower and to do some skating on the Rideau. We stayed at the Chateau Laurier, right next to the parliament buildings - otherwise know as "the castle" to BL. The Chateau was finished in 1912, commissioned by Charles Melville Hays, the chairman of the Grand Trunk Railroad. Unfortunately, he never made it to the opening ceremony. He went down with the Titanic on the way back from Europe where he was shopping for furniture for the Chateau's dining room. They say he still haunts the halls.

It was a perfect weekend for skating. Saturday morning we went down with skates and BL gave it a good try but we didn't get far down the canal. After an hour of trying to skate, it was time for an icy snack.




It was frustrating for the handlers to be on the Rideau on a perfect, sunny, skating day and not be able to tour down the canal. We noticed other parents pushing or pulling their toddlers on all manner of sleds and strollers so the next day we came prepared.






BL had his first taste of Beavertail, and is now a big fan. What's not to love, deep-fried dough with sugar and cinnamon.
